Making a DUN connectoid for Win95

Taking a look at the Windows Help file they may be useful. There are step by step procedures for most settings.

There are several ways to make a Dial-Up-Network(DUN) connectoid.

The easiest is to double click on My Computer if you have that Icon on the desktop.

You should have on your screen something like this:-

My Computer

Double click on Dial-up Networking folder.

If you haven’t got the Icon on the desktop, then click on Start>Programs>Accessories and look for Dial-Up Networking click on that.

If you can't see it you will have to install DUN from your Windows CD but I am assuming that you have got it in the computer. Click here for more information.

Next screen should look like this:-

Dial-Up Networking

If you want to set a DUN connectoid for other Free ISP's and you all ready have an internet connection with a server, it may be possible to register online. Read more about that here

Actually unless you have already got any connectoids you will only have the Icon ‘Make New Connection’.

Double click on Make New Connection and you will get this:-

Make New Connection

Where it says My Connection put Freeserve Connection, or any name you like.

In the Select a device box set the modem you use (assuming you have already installed your modem).

Press Next and you will get:-

Make New Connection Phone Number

Type in the telephone number I have shown above.

Click Next and then Finish.

To show the properties of the Freeserve connectiod go to the Dial-Up Networking window, click right mouse button on 'Freeserve Connection icon' and select Properties.

Should give you:-

Freeserve Connection Properties

Select the Server Types tab at the top:

Freeserve Server Types

Make sure only the boxes above are ticked and Type of Dial-Up Server is set to PPP: Internet, Windows NT Server, Windows 95.

Once you have made the necessary modifications, select the TCP/IP Settings button to display the TCP/IP properties as shown below and add the two sets of DNS values:

TCP/IP Settings

NB: These values normally are not needed, you can leave the server assign IP addresses for the DNS as you connect.  If you have a set-up which requires the IP addresses, now you know what they are.

Hit OK to return to the previous dialogue box.  No script is usually needed for Freeserve, so that tab can be left alone.

Then hit OK to accept the changes to the properties of the Freeserve connectoid.

Within the DUN window, double click the Freeserve connectoid to initiate a call to Freeserve.  A window will pop up asking for the necessary username and password, as shown below:

Connect To

I am assuming that you have an internet browser installed on your machine. If not then look on CD’s that come free with mags like PCPRO they usually have browser software Netscape, Internet Explorer etc. Personally I don’t like IE, I use a program called Opera but it is only available on a 30 day trial period before you have to pay; it’s about £21. Most of the others are free but are much bigger programs and can be much slower in use.

NB: With the Freeserve sign-up process, it is necessary to allow your browser to accept cookies.  If you do not allow cookies to be registered on your computer, you might run across 'severe server errors'.

NB. The nodename is the name you want to use, therefore, I suggested you think of alternative nodenames before you get to this stage, this will reduce your online time registering, while not accepting the nodenames Freeserve might suggest you use.(Keep a note of your nodename and password.)

You have now set up an account with Freeserve.

Altering the Dial-Up Networking connectoid

Now you have to alter the DUN to use Freeserve.

DUN Window

double click the Freeserve icon to initiate a connection to the Freeserve service.

When the window pops up as below:

Connect To Signup

You need to edit the user name & password to the nodename & password you selected during the registration process:

Changing nodename and password

If you like you can create a quick start icon on the desktop by dragging the freeserve connection icon from the Dial-up Networking folder onto the desktop .
