Recently there has been a proliferation in the number of free ISPs. It is quite possible to signup to more then one of them and in most cases without the need for any additional software. (Assuming you already have browser and mail/news reading software in use on your computer).
If you all ready have a service provider (which you possibly have if your reading this) you can usually find free ISP web sites on the internet, and then do an on-line registration. You will then be able connect through them to get onto the Internet and any other service they provide, such as email address Web space etc.
